Ireland gained some consolation for failing to defend their title by coming through to win the second grouping of teams.

Having had a disappointing first day in the strokeplay, the champions for the last two years failed to make it into the top eight.

However they beat Denmark on the final day to clinch ninth place, with Niall Kearney, Simon Ward and Paul Cutler all getting comfortable singles victories.

Denmark won the foursomes clash through Sebastian Cappelen and Jacob Roth, Andreas Hartoe was their other winner.

Spain managed to overcome the handicap of having an injured player to beat Iceland 3-2 to finish 11th. The match was won when Ignacio Elivira beat Sigmundur Masson on the 23rd hole.

The Netherlands finished off with a powerful performance to clinch 13th place, with Jurrian can der Vaart, Tristan Bierenbroodspot, Tim Sluiter nad Rainier Saxton getting a clean sweep of the singles after Hugo Mota nad Jose Maria Joia had won the foursomes for Portugal.

Wales’s disappointing progress in the matchplay stages continued as they lost 3-2 to Belgium to finish 16th.

Adam Runcie and Ben Westgate won the foursomes, while Oliver Farr won the final singles. Hugues Joannes beat Nigel Edwards, Dimitri van Doren beat Joe Vickery, while the decisive match saw Kevin Hesbois edge out Rhys Enoch by a single hole.
